Whenever friends visit Victoria, they usually ask the same question:
“What’s something we should do that’s not on the typical tourist list?”
And honestly, those are my favourite recommendations to give.
Don’t get me wrong, Butchart Gardens, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Beacon Hill Park are wonderful. But some of my favourite places around Victoria are the quieter spots. The bakeries tucked down country roads. The beaches that require a little extra effort to reach. The swimming holes, cafés, and local businesses that somehow don’t get talked about nearly enough.
If you’re looking to explore beyond the usual attractions, here are a few hidden gems in Victoria BC that I find myself recommending again and again.

The Roost is one of those places that’s worth the drive all on its own.
Located in North Saanich, this charming bakery and farm market is known for its incredible baked goods, local produce, and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping in for a coffee and pastry or stocking up on local goodies, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer.
Grab a treat, find a picnic table outside, and enjoy a slower pace for a while.
Tucked away on West Saanich Road, Mosi Bakery has quietly become one of my favourite local spots.
Their pastries are incredible, the coffee is excellent, and the whole place has a relaxed neighbourhood feel. It’s the perfect place to meet a friend, enjoy a slow morning, or grab something delicious before heading out on your next adventure. Our favourite are the croissants, the breakfast sandwiches, and their compost cookie! Yummmm.
If you know, you know.

While many people head straight to some of Victoria’s more popular beaches, Devonian Regional Park remains surprisingly under the radar.
The beach is beautiful, peaceful, and surrounded by stunning coastal scenery. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours beachcombing, skipping rocks, or simply watching the waves roll in. We head here at least once a week, the walk down is beautiful and gives our toddler somewhere to run. Pro tip- stop at one of the many farm stands on your way out to pick up some picnic snacks!
If you’re looking for a quieter beach experience, this is one worth seeking out.
Part café, part grocery store, part neighbourhood gathering place, The Market Garden is one of my favourite spots in Vic West.
You’ll find local products, fresh flowers, baked goods, coffee, and plenty of inspiration for your next meal. Even if you’re just stopping in for a latte, it’s worth taking a few minutes to browse.
It’s one of those businesses that feels like the heart of a community. Trust me, you have to stop here- it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen and you just can’t leave without buying at least one thing!

When summer arrives, many people flock to Thetis Lake. Personally, I often find myself heading to Durrance Lake instead.
Surrounded by forest and far less crowded, it’s a beautiful place for a swim on a warm afternoon. Bring a towel, a book, and a few snacks, and you’ve got the makings of a pretty perfect summer day.
The peaceful atmosphere is what keeps me coming back. Bring a floatie, and head out into the water for a more peaceful escape on the busier days.
The Fickle Fig is one of those places that perfectly captures the charm of the Saanich Peninsula.
Part café, part market, and surrounded by farmland, it feels like a destination without requiring much of a drive. The food is fantastic, the setting is beautiful, and it’s the perfect stop before exploring more of North Saanich. We love this little gem as a family outing and especially on a nice day.
If you’ve never visited, add it to your list.

This might be one of the most unique experiences in the city.
Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like, a floating hot tub cruising around Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Whether you’re planning a date night, celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking for something a little different, it’s a memorable way to experience the city from a completely new perspective.
Definitely not your average Victoria outing. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t LOVE their experience on the Hot Tub Boat!
Located within East Sooke Regional Park, Aylard Farm Beach feels like a hidden treasure.
The walk to the beach is easy and scenic, winding through open fields before arriving at a beautiful stretch of coastline. Once you’re there, you’ll find driftwood, ocean views, and plenty of space to relax.
It’s one of my favourite places to bring visitors who want to experience the rugged beauty of Vancouver Island without committing to a major hike.

One of the things I appreciate most about living here is that there always seems to be another hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Some of my favourite memories have come from spontaneous stops, recommendations from friends, or simply taking a different road home. Whether it’s a new café, a quiet beach, or a swimming spot you’ve never heard of before, Victoria has a way of rewarding curiosity.
Some local favourites include The Roost Farm Bakery, Mosi Bakery, Devonian Regional Park, Durrance Lake, The Fickle Fig, and Aylard Farm Beach.
Devonian Regional Park and Aylard Farm Beach are both beautiful options that tend to feel quieter than some of the city’s more popular beaches.
Durrance Lake is a fantastic swimming spot during the summer months and often feels more relaxed than some of the busier lakes nearby.
For something completely different, try a Hot Tub Boat experience in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

Final Thoughts
As a family photographer, I’m always encouraging parents to get in the frame and document these years while they’re happening. The funny thing is, some of the moments we end up treasuring most aren’t the big milestones, they’re the quiet adventures, coffee dates, beach walks, and ordinary days spent together. If you’d like to capture some of your own, I’d love to connect! Check out my work here!
