When people ask me for recommendations in Victoria, I never know where to start.
There are the obvious tourist attractions, of course, but some of my favourite places are the quieter spots that locals return to again and again. The places that make you slow down, get outside, and appreciate why so many people love living on Vancouver Island.
Whether you’re visiting Victoria for the first time or you’ve lived here for years, these are a few of my favourite ways to spend a day around the city.

If you’re looking for a way to truly slow down, start with a sauna and cold plunge session at Aerth in James Bay.
Tucked away in Victoria, it’s become a favourite spot for locals looking to recharge and spend a few hours disconnected from the usual pace of life. There’s something about alternating between the heat and cold that leaves you feeling completely refreshed.
Perfect for solo mornings, date days, or a little self-care.
One of my favourite combinations is lunch at Charlotte & the Quail followed by a walk through the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific.
The café feels like a hidden retreat in the middle of the city, serving delicious food in a beautiful setting. After lunch, take your time wandering through the gardens. Every season offers something different, and it’s one of those places that always leaves me feeling a little calmer than when I arrived.

Few combinations are better than a great coffee and a waterfront walk.
Pick up a drink from Iluka and head over to the Gorge Waterway. The path follows the water and offers beautiful views, quiet moments, and plenty of opportunities to sit and watch kayakers drift by.
It’s simple, but often the simplest outings end up being the most enjoyable.

This is one of those Victoria days that feels like a mini getaway.
Load up your bikes and head out on the Lochside Trail, winding your way through farmland, forests, and some of the most beautiful stretches of the Saanich Peninsula. Along the way, stop at Harvest Road for lunch, coffee, or one of their baked treats before continuing toward Island View Beach.
Once you arrive, lock up your bikes, kick off your shoes, and spend some time walking the beach or simply enjoying the ocean views.
It’s active without feeling strenuous and makes for a perfect sunny-day adventure.
If you’re looking for one of the best views near Victoria without committing to a full-day hike, Lone Tree Hill is hard to beat.
The climb is manageable, the views are incredible, and it feels like you’ve escaped the city despite being only a short drive away. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch at the top while taking in the scenery.
On a clear day, you’ll understand why this spot is such a local favourite.
Not every Victoria adventure has to happen outdoors.
On a rainy day, head downtown and spend a few hours at the IMAX. Whether you’re watching a documentary or the latest blockbuster, it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon and makes for a great date idea too.
Sometimes popcorn and a giant screen are exactly what the day calls for.

Fisherman’s Wharf never gets old.
Wander past the colourful floating homes, grab lunch from one of the food vendors, and keep an eye out for seals in the harbour. Then hop aboard one of Victoria’s iconic water taxis and see the city from a completely different perspective.
It’s one of the most uniquely Victoria experiences you can have.
There are few better places to spend a rainy Victoria afternoon than Munro’s Books.
Take your time browsing the shelves, discovering new authors, and enjoying one of Canada’s most beautiful independent bookstores. Even if you leave with just one book, it feels like time well spent.
Oak Bay is one of those neighbourhoods that’s best explored without a plan.
Browse the local boutiques, wander the tree-lined streets, and pop into the little shops along the avenue. When you’re ready for a break, stop at De’lish for lunch or a latte.
Tucked away from the busier parts of the city, it feels like one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets.
One of the things I appreciate most about Victoria is that you don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy it.
Some of my favourite days have involved nothing more than a coffee, a walk, and a little curiosity. There are beautiful beaches, forests, gardens, cafés, and hidden gems tucked throughout the city if you’re willing to slow down and explore.
Whether you’re planning a visit or simply looking for a new way to spend your weekend, I hope this list inspires you to get out and enjoy a few of the places that make Victoria so special.

Some local favourites include visiting Aerth for a sauna and cold plunge, biking the Lochside Trail to Island View Beach, exploring Fisherman’s Wharf by water taxi, and wandering the HCP Gardens.
Munro’s Books, the IMAX, local cafés, and boutique shopping in Oak Bay are all great rainy-day options. Also check out Uptown mall for some unique stores, or head over to one of the many farmers markets going on throughout the area on the weekends with your umbrella!
Walking the Gorge, hiking Lone Tree Hill, exploring Island View Beach, and wandering through Oak Bay are all inexpensive ways to enjoy the city.
Cycling the Lochside Trail, hiking Lone Tree Hill, visiting Island View Beach, and exploring the HCP Gardens are all wonderful outdoor adventures.

Victoria has a way of making even ordinary days feel a little more memorable.
Whether you’re watching the sunset from the beach, discovering a new favourite coffee shop, or exploring a trail you’ve never walked before, there are countless ways to enjoy this corner of Vancouver Island.
And if you’re looking to document your own season of life here, many of my favourite family sessions take place in the very spots I’ve shared above. Feel free to explore my portfolio or reach out if you’d like to create something together.
