Victoria BC Montessori Schools: What Parents Should Know Before Choosing One

“Would Montessori be a good fit?”

If you’ve been researching Victoria BC Montessori schools, you’ve probably discovered there are quite a few options—but understanding the differences can feel overwhelming.

Every child is different, and every family values different things. This guide isn’t about finding the “best” school. Instead, it’s meant to give you an overview of what Montessori education is and introduce some of the wonderful Montessori schools around Victoria to help you begin your search.

What Is Montessori Education?

Montessori is a child-led approach to learning that encourages independence, curiosity, and hands-on exploration.

Instead of teacher-led lessons all day long, children are encouraged to choose activities, work at their own pace, and develop practical life skills alongside academic learning.

Many families are drawn to Montessori because it focuses on:

  • Independence
  • Respect for the child
  • Hands-on learning
  • Mixed-age classrooms
  • Learning through exploration
  • Confidence and responsibility

Every Montessori school is a little different, so it’s always worth booking a tour and asking questions.

Victoria Montessori School

One of the longest-running Montessori schools in the region, Victoria Montessori School offers programs for children from preschool through elementary.

Families often appreciate its well-established community and authentic Montessori approach.

Great for: Families looking for a traditional Montessori experience.

Maria Montessori Academy

Maria Montessori Academy offers Montessori education alongside a strong academic foundation.

The classrooms encourage independence while providing a structured environment where children can develop confidence and curiosity.

Great for: Families seeking a balance of independence and academics.

Westmont Montessori School

Located in Metchosin, Westmont Montessori serves many Westshore families.

The school emphasizes hands-on learning, outdoor play, and helping children become confident, capable learners.

Great for: Families living in Langford, Colwood, and View Royal.

Side note- we attended a mom and tot program here and LOVED the school. The setting is incredible with huge trees and backs onto an ocean trail, a big garden for the kids to learn in as well. The teachers were all so lovely and we hope to send our daughter here one day.

Selkirk Montessori School

Located in Victoria, Selkirk Montessori School offers programs for children in a nurturing, child-centred environment that follows Montessori principles. The school focuses on fostering independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning through hands-on activities and self-directed exploration.

Families often appreciate the welcoming community and the emphasis on helping each child develop at their own pace while building confidence and responsibility.

Great for: Families looking for a warm, supportive Montessori environment with a strong focus on independence and individualized learning.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Montessori School

Every family has different priorities.

When touring schools, here are a few questions worth asking:

  • What ages are in each classroom?
  • How much outdoor time do children have each day?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • How do teachers communicate with parents?
  • What is the school’s approach to conflict resolution?
  • Is lunch provided?
  • What is the transition process for new students?

Sometimes you’ll simply know when you’ve found the right fit.

Our Experience

Every child learns differently, and no single educational philosophy is perfect for everyone.

For our family, what mattered most wasn’t finding the “perfect” school, it was finding a place where our daughter felt safe, curious, supported, and excited to learn.

Trust your instincts. Visit a few schools. Ask lots of questions. You’ll quickly get a sense of which environment feels right for your child.
