If you’ve ever stood in the baby aisle staring at 37 different swaddles wondering, “Do they actually need this?”… you’re not alone.
Before I became a mom, I bought the cute outfits, or the soft stuffed animal they probably never used.
Now?
I know the gifts that make you cry (in the best way), the ones you use every single day, and the ones you never knew you needed until 2:00 a.m. with a newborn.
Whether you’re shopping for your sister, your best friend, or a coworker, here are my favourite baby shower gifts that new parents will genuinely appreciate.
The diapers get used.
The clothes get outgrown.
But the photographs? They’ll become some of the most treasured things they own.
If it’s within your budget, gifting part (or all) of a newborn or family photography session is something they’ll enjoy for decades. Most photographers would be happy to send a gift card in the mail or online. Check out my newborn work here!

One of the best gifts we received wasn’t wrapped.
It was dinner.
Skip the novelty gifts and give them a few evenings where nobody has to think about cooking.
If you’re in Victoria, BC, check out this local company! Wolfe Meal Prep.
Sleep deprivation is hard enough.
Coming home to a clean kitchen? Pure magic.
Even a one-time professional clean can feel like an incredible gift during those first few weeks.
Being able to wear your baby while making lunch, walking the dog, or comforting a fussy newborn is life-changing.
Choose one with good back support that will grow with baby.

It might not seem exciting…
Until it’s the reason everyone gets a little more sleep. We have two in our house and a travel one that we can leave home without.
We love Hatch for their quality and durability and design! They also transform into grow clocks for your kiddos when they get older.
Everyone buys gifts for the baby.
Don’t forget Mom.
A soft robe she’ll practically live in during those newborn weeks is something she’ll thank you for every morning.
I bought this one when I was a new Mom, and it was one of the best items I purchased hands down.
Hydration becomes surprisingly important—especially for breastfeeding moms.
A large insulated water bottle quickly became one of my everyday essentials.
Everyone buys newborn diapers.
The bigger sizes often become the ones parents are most grateful to have later.
Ask guests to bring their favourite children’s book with a note written inside instead of a greeting card.
Years later, those handwritten messages become just as meaningful as the stories themselves.

The first smile.
The first steps.
The tiny handprints.
A beautiful memory book helps preserve all the little milestones that are surprisingly easy to forget.
(I love this one from Artifacts Uprising)
Those tiny hands don’t stay tiny for long.
Fill a small rolling cart with snacks, lip balm, tissues, chargers, burp cloths, water flavour packets, and anything else a new parent might want within arm’s reach.
Simple.
Perfect.
Always appreciated.
One of those items you’ll use far more often than you expect.
Long contact naps suddenly become much more enjoyable with a great show to watch.
Think less “baby.”
More “mom.”
Include cozy socks, herbal tea, chocolate, bath salts (for later), lip balm, and nourishing snacks.
Middle-of-the-night diaper changes feel much easier with soft lighting instead of turning on the bright overhead lights.
Load it with family photos before gifting it, then let grandparents (or parents) continue adding memories over time.
One afternoon of holding the baby while someone showers…
Might be the most generous gift on this list.
Photos freeze what this season looked like.
A film lets you hear the tiny giggles, the sleepy newborn noises, and all the little moments that disappear far too quickly.
It’s a gift that becomes more valuable every single year.
Check them out here– since i’m the only one on Vancouver Island making them!

Sometimes the most meaningful gift doesn’t cost anything.
Write about the kind of parent you already know they’ll become.
It’s something they’ll likely keep forever.
When we were sleep deprived and a friend text me and said “don’t make dinner, i’m on my way to bring it over to you” I had tears well up in my eyes. (Hormones? maybe.) But having a friend thats been there and knows how much more meaningful that was vs another cute outfit really made me realize that I had been gifting wrong all along. The first few exhausting months parents need care- they need to feel seen, and heard (and sometimes held!) Any of the top 21 gifts above would be incredible for a new Mom in Victoria, BC or on Vancouver Island.
